Frequently Asked Questions
- Where can I find Konsyl products?
- A list of stores carrying Konsyl products can be found on this page.
- When is the best time to take Konsyl powder products?
- They can be taken anytime day or night, with or without food. The only consideration is that you must drink plenty of fluid (8 glasses daily for overall good health). If you take it too late in the evening you will not allow yourself time to consume adequate fluid. Not to mention, if you drink a lot of liquid at night you may be up urinating in the night. Another consideration for night time dosing is that when you go to sleep, your body slows down to a "rest mode"; body systems are not operating as efficiently as during the day when you're up and moving around. The longer waste stays in the colon; more water is being drawn out. We suggest nighttime dosing to those individuals who are taking it for diarrhea or loose stools, because too much fluid in the stool is actually a problem for them. For constipation we suggest that Konsyl be taken early in the day when you will be active and moving around and your body systems are functioning at a higher rate. Also, you have more time to consume additional fluids throughout the day.
- Have studies concluded the most effective time to use Konsyl?
- We don't have studies per se, but the labeling states "morning or evening, before or after meals, but not with other medications". The most important thing is to establish a routine.
- Can I take Konsyl Powder products with other medications?
- You must allow at least 2 hours if you take other meds first and 2 hours if you take Konsyl first. The concern here is absorption in the stomach. Since psyllium is such a hydrophilic product, some physicians are concerned that it may absorb other medications that are in the stomach at the same time and carry them out of the body without the patient getting the full benefit. If you are taking coumadin warfarin or other similar medications, check with your Physician before taking Konsyl products.
- Why is Konsyl so hard to mix?
- Konsyl and Konsyl Easy Mix both provide 6 grams of psyllium per dose, more than any other brand. Psyllium does not dissolve away into water like sugar and other inactive ingredients; psyllium actually absorbs the water around it. The fact that is absorbs quickly and there is 6 grams makes it more difficult. That is why we provide FREE Konsyl Shaker Cups to facilitate easier mixing, "shake, don't stir". Konsyl Easy Mix has the maltodextrin coating to help, and it is easier to mix than Original.

- How does Konsyl help with constipation?
- By absorbing 80 times its weight in water and bulking in the colon, Konsyl encourages the natural peristaltic action to move the waste through the colon. As waste moves through the colon water is continually being drawn out. By retaining all of the absorbed water, even after making the long trip through the intestinal tract, there is plenty to ensure the waste is moist and easy to pass. Psyllium also produces a mucilage (or gel-like substance) when mixed with water. This gel-like mucilage property helps ensure smooth passage through the colon and rectum.
- How does Konsyl help with hemorrhoids?
- By absorbing the water, bulking in the colon and keeping stools moist and easy to pass, pre-existing hemorrhoids are not aggravated and new hemorrhoids are not formed as a result of straining to pass the stool.
- How does Konsyl help with diarrhea?
- Because psyllium absorbs 80 times its weight in water, it will absorb some of the excess fluid in the stool. It also slows down the movement of the stool through the colon by bulking it up.
- How does Konsyl help with diverticular disease?
- By bulking the stool and enhancing the movement through the colon at a normal rate and ensuring a moist easy-to-pass stool, it helps reduce colonic pressure and prevents new pockets from forming as a result of constipation. For the existing pockets, the bulkier stool serves to scrub the inside walls (to include the bulging pockets) of any seeds, toxins, waste, etc that may be lodged there. Diverticulosis is the presence of these pockets. Diverticulitis is inflamed or irritated pockets that lead to pain, fever and perhaps hospitalization. Diverticular Disease cannot be cured or eliminated; it must just be treated and/or managed once the pockets form.
- How does Konsyl help with Irritable Bowel Syndrome?
- Since IBS is different for different people, Konsyl will help regulate the constipation, diarrhea, or alternating effects of each of these for the IBS patient. By normalizing the bowel movements when taken on a regular basis, IBS patients can eliminate the symptoms of this condition. IBS is a condition that must be managed on a daily basis to ensure normal daily life for its sufferers.
- How does Konsyl help lower cholesterol levels?
- Because the nature of psyllium fiber is a sticky substance in the body, it tends to bind the bile acids that are normally absorbed, thereby reducing cholesterol levels in the blood.
- How does Konsyl help people with Type 2 Diabetes?
- It slows down the absorption of glucose in the body. Again because of the sticky nature of psyllium in the body, it holds or binds the bile acids and hinders the absorption.
- Can Konsyl cause choking?
- Yes, if it is not mixed properly in a beverage.
- What is the shelf life for Konsyl?
- Konsyl is all-natural and therefore does not spoil. The shelf life is 5 years from the date of manufacture.
